2020.09.11 18:30 lovermanldn Should I propose to my Filipina partner?

Magandang araw!
I (28M/UK) was supposed to propose to my partner in June. But due to COVID of course, it has been postponed but I would really like to be engaged to her already as we have talked about getting married in mid-late 2021.
My partner cares a lot about her family’s approval of me & our relationship, and I’m pretty sure they would frown upon an online proposal. But who knows when COVID will end & allow us to see each other..
I have a few questions:
1) What do you think Filipino parents & grandparents would think/say about an online proposal?
2) Should I wait until we see each other, or just cease the day & propose? If you think I should propose now, how do you think I should do it, whilst involving her family in some way?
Maraming salamat po!

2020.09.05 00:21 ReedAlexandersHorror Book Review: Black Cranes (2020)

Black Cranes

Roots, bloody roots…

In order for me to consider an anthology good, it needs at least three solid stories that are worth the purchase. The only exception, my review of the Creeping Corruption Anthology, where I mentioned that The Being by J. M. Striker, was worth the cover price, alone!
And yes, the first three are worth the cover price. They’re not just good, they’re fantastic! Even the second, Kapre, which I had the most difficulty with as a critic, was marvelous in its own right and is arguably the best of the first three. Though, I favor the first story merely as a personal preference for its stylization of science fiction.
Importantly, there wasn’t one story I didn’t like. In fact, the whole collection is fantastic and I made every effort possible not to spoil them or even swear if I could help it. But fuck’s sake, I tend to swear even more when I like something this much, and I had to work it out of my system.
I absolutely recommend this anthology! In fact, I can’t recommend it enough. My few complaints are easily ignored and wholly irrelevant. Most importantly, this anthology has a power to it! Every story is a gut punch that’s hard to recover from!

SPOILERS!!! (While I did my best to avoid them, take care reading beyond this point.)

THE GENETIC ALCHEMIST’S DAUGHTER by Elaine Cuyegkeng
A sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” ~ Arthur C. Clark
The depiction of this technologically advanced society sounds more like a work of fantasy, as well it should. We can grip to every detail with scientific plausibility, and yet it will sound like pure fantasy. It had a master-crafted setting that defines magnificent details but doesn’t labor on them.
The tense is a little jarring. It’s like someone reciting present tense from memory. Not a third person present tense, or a narrator describing it to the reader, but like a person describing a memory like it’s happening right now.
The premise is simple. What if you could correct independent and disobedient women with modified clones. Kinda like The Stepford Wives. No spoilers, it will leave you shooked!
KAPRE: A LOVE STORY by Rin Chupeco
The opening is difficult to digest and a bit rambling. I had to read it more than twice, and each attempt caused more confusion. Thus, it bucked me from my reader’s trance. Most of the first paragraph was a mess and didn’t flow naturally until the fourth sentence.
However, I will implore you to read on, as I did. After, I consumed each word no less eagerly than the previous story. It’s so rare to get a glimpse into the nightmarish tales of other cultures. Certainly rare enough to be able to immerse myself in those nightmarish machinations.
Outside of its initial hangups, this is a fantastic story.

A PET IS FOR LIFE by Geneve Flynn
A few word choice issues here. I know it’s difficult to stand out without being poetic, but you can lose the reader. Statements like “…prickled with recognition” made me tilt my head and caused me to stop reading. I know we mean goosebumps, and I know statements like “feeling eyes on you” are cliche’, but there’s nothing wrong with that, and no need to reinvent the wheel with words. Though, as a writer, I’m guilty of this, myself.
I’m also not sure if the perspective hopping worked. I didn’t struggle with it, but it did stumble at least once. However, neither this nor the prior mentioned word choices were reason enough for me to stop reading.
The rest of the story is quite compelling. It’s a creature feature of a sort that pits two mythological supernatural beings against each other, only one I’m particularly familiar with. Either way, it was a fun read.

PHOENIX CLAWS by Lee Murray
This touches me so deeply. Being married to a Filipina woman, I had to formally request her hand in marriage from the father. So much cultural significance went into this, my (eventual) wife was a nervous wreck. I remember the inward sigh I took when my (now) father smiled and asked me to tell his wife, my (now) mother. While I remained stoic, I wanted to faint!
I especially love this story’s focus on food. My father seemed especially excited about my generalist appetite and eagerness to try new things that would make most white guys turn green (like Balut… look it up)!
Is foodie horror a thing? Yeah, it works. Shows like Bizarre Foods International wouldn’t exist if it didn’t. This even has deep cultural significance and if horror is for anything, it’s calling out existing power structures. In fact, I found myself deeply offended when the character Fin turned his nose up at Luce’s culture. At one point, even pulling that reverse racism crap. Which I must flatly state, is not a real thing. Racism requires a power structure, a system to enforce it. Outside of that, it’s just white people being whiny.
I mean seriously, would eating one fucking claw have really killed him?

OF HUNGER AND FURY by Grace Chan
Writing you can feel on your skin. If you don’t feel sticky and icky after the first few pages, you ain’t human! It’s so assaulting on the mind, I swear I could taste it. That’s a solid form of body horror; making the reader’s body feel grimy. Every descriptor in this short is about texture. The kind that repulses, but penetrates primordially.
This story’s refusal to praise the male protagonist for “not being an asshole,” is just so right. He does the minimum and is even condescending about it. He doesn’t treat Fang like an equal and he certainly doesn’t treat her culture as equal. There is a lot of complicated layers here. The main character feels like she abandoned and was simultaneously abandoned by her culture. She’s so estranged from her family and her heritage, it seems that she doesn’t know her own father has died.
It’s hard to place the spirit that haunts her. Is it the spirit of a dead girl lost from an unsolved murder? Is it the spirit of the main character’s existential dread? Is it the spirit of her severed heritage yearning to be recognized? Maybe all of the above. Maybe the spirit of that dead girl felt so deeply for that existential dread, for the yearning to be recognized, it just became about that.

SKIN DOWDY by Angela Yuriko Smith
This reminds me of the YouTube short, Doll Face, and for context please watch it: Doll Face
I’m not against body modification. Quite the opposite. There is no better or more obvious way to show control over your own body. And through this, one can easily express how they feel, how they want to shine. However, it’s important to remember the heightened social standers women are systematically expected to hold. Often for the pleasure of men.
Absolutely brilliant how this story depicts that concept in such an interesting cyberpunk setting.

TRUTH IS ORDER AND ORDER IS TRUTH by Nadia Bulkin
Okay, don’t get me wrong, this is a FASCINATING exposition on a foreign, almost alien culture. It did become a bit of a slog, though. I felt like I should be taking notes. However, the slog seemed sort of understandable. This story does begin with an epic pilgrimage- a literal slog. Perhaps an exposition slog is perfect to depict the sensation of a literal slog.
My god, all I can say about this is that it’s a fascinating epic. It’s downright biblical. Much as the concepts are all foreign to me, they are all easily digestible in ways I can understand. Concepts I read for the first time flowed naturally when they should likely seem strange. A fantastic read!
One final note, I’m deeply happy the foreign cultures H. P. Lovecraft so dismissively pissed on, are taking their culture back from the blaggard. Don’t cancel… re-appropriate.

RITES OF PASSAGE by Gabriela Lee
The idea of ‘future tense’ is always a bit of a struggle, but I thought it was fun how this reads like a prophecy. It was a bit of a stumble when it landed in the now, and again when it further moved to past tense. It’s actually interesting as the tenses are reversed. The future tense depicting “when the child was born,” the present tense being “What the child did,” and the past tense being “what the child will do?”
While this is extremely experimental for English, it really worked well. When the future tense describes the past, I didn’t lose sight of that, even when the tense changed again. And while it made me tilt my head contemplatively, it didn’t stop me from reading, nor jar my reader’s trance.

THE NINTH TALE by Rena Mason
This story did seem to stagger on even though it felt like it was over. I kept reading, wondering what more there was to say, being pleasantly surprised that what was said next made needed to be said.
I’m a little familiar with the legends of fox spirits, though, this expanded on them beautifully. I love how well the myth is depicted as terrifying, even unforgiving, but somehow fair. It’s not good, but it’s not even evil, and though a little serendipitous, still seemingly natural and without malice. Like a fox eating a mouse for sustenance. It’s good that Xin and Zhang seem to deserve their fate, but even if they didn’t, it would still seem oddly appropriate.
I also love how this is a commentary on traditional Japanese foot binding. As mentioned initially about the story SKIN DOWDY, it’s important to remember the heightened social standers women are systematically expected to hold.

VANILLA RICE by Angela Yuriko Smith
Every moment of this story made my heart ache. This mother just wants her daughter to be loved and accepted. Unlike the first in the collection, which was about modifying women to control them, this is about how existing social controls already modify them. It’s like the Chinese practice of eye-widening so that women and men seem more ‘Caucasian.’ The prevalence of western domination has deeply scared these cultures where even levels of white supremacy psychologically affect them.
This woman was so psychologically sacred by cultural erasure, she seeks to erase it from her own daughter. I can think of no better name to spoof than Vanilla Ice, a white rapper who tried to appropriate black culture. White culture basically appropriated this woman’s daughter, after all.
An absolutely beautiful read with elements of body horror. Bravo!

FURY by Christina Sng
This one also starts off with a full paragraph of awkward sentences. This time it was almost enough to make me stop reading. Were it not for my duties as a critic, I would have. Importantly, I did not regret that I kept reading or I would have stopped, duties be damned (it might not be fair, but it’s honest).
Beyond the awkward opening is a somewhat generic zombie horror. However, it was still pretty good. It had all the right elements of survival, struggle, and a sense of sacrifice. It was good, and that is good enough.
This was a little long though fast-paced enough to keep me moving. A lot of it reminded me of 28 Days Later (2002) with the pulse-pounding stylization. The ending, which I won’t spoil, reminded me of I Am Legend by Richard Mathison.

THE MARK by Grace Chan
There’s a constant theme in this anthology about white men who ‘land’ Asian women, only to become bored and dismissive of them by the time the story opens. This must be a consistent issue with their culture, something I’ve had first-hand experience with. I married my wife because she was the perfect partner. Our personalities meshed well, we came from similar backgrounds, had similar likes, and a similar sense of humor. I felt it vain at the time that I was marrying the female version of myself. I was shocked to discover that even my more liberal friends were more preoccupied with the fact that I’d ‘landed an Asian.’ Enough so, over time I even systematically cut those friends out of my life. This is so pervasive, it still comes up to this day and I’m never sure how to address it. Though I’m sure I’m always visibly annoyed when it comes up. People (primarily men) often treat my wife as a fetish, when I see her as my best friend.
The protagonist in this book describes her husband as an imposter, and I think I know why. Far too often are women treated like trophies, conquests that the shine has faded from. I can’t imagine how this reflects on ‘exotic’ trophy wives. This woman’s husband was always an imposter. James was the fabrication, replaced by the robot that was always there.

FRANGIPANI WISHES by Lee Murray
This is like a poem, with emotions and meaning made visual through word. Actually, it’s a fantastic expression of emotions and visual things through word. This is broken by short little poems that separate each moment in the body of the work. The story flows beautifully. There is even a rhythm to it.
Here’s the thing, the story is fascinating, gripping in fact, but it’s not horror in the classical sense and isn’t my usual jam. However, the rhythm, flow, and illustration through the written word were so damn compelling, it hardly mattered. I didn’t just consume this story, I devoured it. I don’t even consider it the best of the anthology, but I clung to every word of it.
That being said… the ending. GOOD LORD that ending hits like a freight train. The rhythm builds up this force and when it finally stops, it’s like a bullet to the sternum.

LITTLE WORM by Geneve Flynn
I’m not sure if anyone reading my literary reviews is familiar with my movie reviews, but I’m kinda well known for one specific review… well, a rant really, about The Taking of Deborah Logan and how it missed the point of its own story. Deborah is succumbing to dementia and as her mind leaves, something else begins to take over. The problem is, the whole concept of isolation and loss is completely destroyed by un-fucking-watchable shakey camera. They had this beautiful thing, wrapped up in a compelling story, and ruined it with a silly gimmick.
This story gives me what The Taking of Deborah Logan, should have given me. It gives me the full blunt force trauma of that loss and the slow isolation of being robbed of one’s faculties.
But what’s eating this woman isn’t dementia or just some random demon. Its a spirit of all her deepest regrets, her hopes, and dreams that have been lost over the years, made manifest.

Closing

Once again -and seriously, I can not stress this enough- this collection is fantastic. It’s beyond worth the cover price, it’s an instant classic and I’d be damned shocked if we never hear from these writes again.
Please read these stories. If you have any regrets after doing so, you need to take a good hard look at your life.

2020.08.31 15:18 oonlipaps Offering: Filipino and English Seeking: Spanish and Japanese

Hi! I'm a Filipina and I'm looking for a language exchange partner. At the moment, my main focus is Spanish. I have been studying at our local Instituto Cervantes and will soon be taking up A2.5, the last level before B1.
I am also looking for a language partner to learn Japanese. I was studying it on-and-off for about ten years before I switched gears to study Spanish. With the lack of speaking practice, I haven't been able to warm-up naturally to N4.
I am a documentary buff, so I would really like to learn about other cultures and their history. As serious as that sounds, I am also an avid pop culture, musical theater, and drag race geek.
Let me know if you would like to chat!

2020.08.31 12:01 Entangulum AITA for not wanting to go to my husband family gatherings?

A little context here as I feel it’s important: I (20f) am white and married to a Filipino (22m)
When my parents divorced, it was because of my fathers affairs with Filipina women. As a child 7-16 my father would bring me to large Filipino gatherings and parties that I would hate and be super uncomfortable with. I unfortunately had a horrible opinion on Filipinos because of the mistakes my father made.
I eventually got better and realized I shouldn’t hate the people but I still hate their parties as I get overwhelmed easily and have sensory overloads and problems eating. Pretty much any gathering you go to, it’s packed with friends, family, friends of friends, co workers.. just a whole lot of people. There is also always loud talking, music and most likely karaoke being blasted or people playing loud/rowdy games. I don’t like eating in front of people due to a harsh upbringing and honestly don’t want to be rude by throwing food out if I try it and find I don’t like it so I avoid eating all together.
Here’s where the AITA part comes in:
I love my husband and his family and enjoy my time with time but can’t stand going to parties that includes anyone more than that. His immediate family is also quite large to begin with at 9 siblings, 3 of which have partners and then their parents totalling a whopping 16 people in the house at a time.
Yesterday we went to a party hosted by one of his aunts that had several families attending and all their children easily making it 80 or more people. When things got loud I had to remove myself from the main room to go somewhere quieter and calm down to avoid breaking down and crying. My husband came to find me and got upset that I wasn’t playing the games with everyone even though he knows I hate being around such loud people. He told me I should just try to have fun and socialize with all these random people as they wanted to get to know me.
I told him I would try but it didn’t last long with people constantly touching my belly without asking (I’m 8mo pregnant) and children screaming and running around me. This really bothered me since I don’t like kids unless I’m directly related to them and wish people would treat me as if I were not pregnant since their attitudes change so much it’s disturbing to see.
I ended up leaving the room again and letting my husband know, staying there until we went home. I know he’s upset with me but won’t say it since he knows I’m uncomfortable with these situations but still wants me to be involved, I want to be involved too, just in a much calmer and more respectful way of my personal space.
AITA for not wanting to go to these parties at all? And for hiding away from everyone until I can leave? He hasn’t really made me feel bad about it but I do feel guilty as this is the way his family likes to socialize and I can’t seem to make myself enjoy the company.

2020.08.21 21:37 SailorPeanus "One of the good ones" - My sister-in-laws attempt at saving herself from a racist remark

I'd like to start by saying my sister in law is the sweetest and kindest person I have ever met...but she is sheltered and naiive.
To provide some back story, I am a half Filipina woman with a white man-- We are currently in America, but I would like to go back to my home land...as I grew up in Japan and have a dual citizenship. (This a very long story so I will skip this information)
My partner wanted to make sure I got to know his family as well...and so far they have been very kind people...(aside from his step father..) at any rate, his brother is also marrying a full blood Filipina...
There are some very disturbing stereotypes regarding specifically Filipina women marrying white men. I defended my mother often from these remarks even though I know she's heard it before.
Well... My sister in law made a comment about how this Filipina is just using her brother to get access to the US.... (I've met her before and happen to think she's very nice and does in fact love him)
She then realized what she said and turned to me to save face "b-but not you, you're one of the good ones..."
I laughed and smiled...excused myself and cried in the bathroom for a moment, collected myself and sent them off with an awkward smile. (I admit a petty side of myself wanted to make sure that not everything was completely fine...but didn't want to make a scene)
The words are still ringing in my ears..."one of the good ones" as if the other non-white side of me is dirty and unclean....my partner sympathized with me but also defended his sister for just being naiive... But I'm still angry...
I wanted to see if anyone else here has had a similar experience, as I don't have anyone to talk to about this (at least not in America)

2020.08.21 16:02 SailorPeanus Confession of a 1/2 Asian pregnant woman who is to give birth to a 3/4 white child

As many other half Asians-- I struggled with my identity for a long time. In my particular situation I am half Filipina half white, but I grew up in Japan, speaking English, Japanese, and Tagalog... My father was very accepting of my mother's culture, and understood that I would be also heavily influenced by my environment and emerse myself in Japanese culture as well. It was difficult enough explaining my Filipina roots to my Japanese friends--- but I admit...I never identified with my white side...
My family moved to America in my college years...and everything got worse. I was accused of being a Mexican who "refused to speak Spanish". Asian Americans told me I wasnt really Asian cus 1 I was half or 2 because "Fililinas are not REALLY Asian they have Spanish roots" which is absolutely not true.... And even worse I was accused of being ashamed of "whatever the heck" I am because I have more "Japanese mannerisms" but no Japanese blood.
Now...I'm in love with my partner who is full white.... But I am ashamed and scared to admit I fear for my child. I discussed my identity issues with my partner...which he tries his best to understand but now that we have a baby on the way...I asked him how he will feel when I try to keep my roots strong and teach them both Japanese and Tagalog (along with English as we are in America now.) He jokingly said once..that our children will be white because they will be 3/4...and my heart sank. My partner, I am finding, doesn't see culture as something important and cannot identify with my struggle...and in some ways I believe he thinks I am racist towards white people for fearing that my children will lose the culture I try so hard to protect in these lands.
I am ashamed to be afraid. Many of my friends here (not all) do not understand my fear, and are upset with me for thinking of this at all---and think I should "just be happy that I am going to have a child"
I feel like the side of me I most identify with is being confiscated...
One of my friends even admitted to me that she felt like I was implying that white people were inferior because of my fear.
It's to the point where---despite the fact that I don't just go telling everyone I meet about this---I feel like I should just bite my tongue and see what happens.
So here I am reddit... I don't know whether I will be looked down upon for this post or not... I don't know if I really am in the wrong here like so many say... But this is just how I feel... Please don't misunderstand, if my child chooses to identify as white---that will be their decision... I mean only to confess that I have fear for what they will go through...and that this stress has been very difficult for me (especially with the change in hormones)

2020.08.16 21:59 Kanin_Yummy Do we all agree that spouses of different ethnicities/heritages have a legitimate right to personally associate with each other’s culture?

Edit: I rearranged the text and added an example of what I mean.
Personally I don’t worry too much about cultural appropriation outside of serious cases, but on the topic of interracial marriage, do we all agree that each spouse should fully embrace each other’s culture? Do you think there’s some scenarios that would normally come across as cultural appropriation but are fine if a person has married someone of that background? I don’t think the last part 100% applies to romantic partners that aren’t yet married, but I think they should definitely put an effort into understanding each other’s background and other people should assume that the partners are open-minded.
For example I I’d find it extremely weird and distasteful if say a White person like seriously personally identifies themself with a minority culture for some reason and I know many people would label this appropriation. But I think that if a White person married married someone of that background then I think it’s good for them to partially identify and associate themselves with that culture, and I think they have a right to feel personally offended by whatever discrimination their spouse faces.
I’m pretty sure my opinion aligns with the majority of mixed people but I wanted to hear people’s thoughts. I think that spouses personally associating with each other’s culture is a good way to support their children in embracing their identities. I’m White-Filipina and I didn’t fully embrace my Filipino side until two years ago. My mom didn’t teach us Tagalog because it was difficult with my Anglophone dad (after a lot of practice I’m fluent in Taglish now tho.) I feel like I missed out on a distinctly bicultural upbringing that some of my Asian friends had and in retrospect I kinda wish my dad played a more active role fostering that.

2020.07.17 15:46 RedJames416 Over a year with no contact and still struggling...help appreciated

So...my second marriage (this time to an alcoholic) fell apart and I moved across the country to be back closer to family after 20 years away. I met a woman at work who over time really ticked my boxes, and after about six weeks of Skype messaging, lunches, etc we got romantically involved. It was very passionate and even “soulful” (her words not mine). I felt very confident and not needy at all...eg I wouldn’t hesitate to disagree with her respectfully (I wasn’t trying to sycophantically please her) over things, equal balance in initiating things, and so on. In a word it was wonderful for about six weeks, then I started getting a bit more anxious like why isn’t she responding as quickly as she used to when I text her, things like that.
Things snowballed from there, with the key fatal moment being one day she ghosted me even though we had been extremely amorous 2 days before. I got very anxious/hurt/upset and couldn’t sleep or go to work the next day (which I know was my issue, if I could only have just stayed cool and patiently questioned her what’s up). We had a big fight, and I suggested we stop being physically involved for a bit so I could deal with my anxiety about things (which while true, I think I took too much responsibility). She appeared sad when I suggested this, but agreed and told me tearfully how safe I made her feel (before). Still, she started initiating texts (and even some flirtatious type ones) more often, but started becoming more hesitant to hang out.
This type of behaviour and others confused and made me insecure more and more, start chasing more and generally I became an anxious wreck. One key issue was that even when we were physically involved and she was saying things about how soulful and sensual etc our chemistry was, she was still hesitant to commit to being called my girlfriend. Part of that I thought was maybe a cultural difference (she is Filipina emigrated two years ago and I’m Wonder bread).
Anyways, things spiralled as I pushed more and more to get things to work, and we had conversations about commitment and working through each of our emotional issues (she shared with me some nasty things she had suffered earlier in life). I had found Dr Hendrix’s book about attachment styles and imago partners (“Keeping the Love You Find”) and was keen for us to work through it together, but she wouldn’t.
Trying to make a long story somewhat shorter, I guess I felt a little betrayed inasmuch as I was willing to sacrifice things because of the love (and sadly, also because of my own neediness) I felt for her ....willing to take her as she was and seek to understand. At the same time I know my chasing and smothering behaviour was driven by ego defences / pride. I did lots of counseling and such, but my mental and spiritual health kept deteriorating to the point where I couldn’t concentrate at work, obsessing over things and the like. I ended up off of work and had a total breakdown (not all about her, but the thing triggered lots of stuff)...had to tell work HR what was going on and why...they called her in and she made things sound to them like we weren’t much of a thing before....then agreed when I insisted we had been involved. Ended up blocking me on the company IM (even though obviously I had her phone number and wasn’t harassing her) which I think sent me off the edge. I became suicidal and reclusive for months on end (and it wasn’t all about her I’ve got lots of demons I’ve been fighting) until finally I lost my apartment back in February and ended up in a homeless shelter. Which is where I still am due to the incredible difficulty in finding affordable housing in my city (and in finding a decent job during this COVID thing).
I’m getting some things together but it’s incredibly difficult to get out of this situation, and I’m rather lonely for the kind of connection her and I had. Obviously I have my issues and she had hers, I just can’t understand why she wasn’t willing to work things through even though our connection was so soulful, electric and powerful. And strong friendship aspect too, in short it was everything I was looking for and lacking in previous relationships.
I fear I probably pushed her too far / things broke down too much although there was never any name calling, abuse or anything like that. And I still struggle with “why did I behave so needy when I knew better, when I was demonstrably better early on in the relationship”. I feel sometimes still like I had my soulmate and fucked it all up. I know there are other women I could establish such a connection with it’s just so tough trying to find.
I tried therefore reaching out to her. I left a couple of voice messages on her phone (which rang through therefore she hadn’t blocked me there) spaced about a week apart, first one saying I don’t like how we left things, second one apologizing for letting work get involved when it wasn’t strictly needed and thanking her for telling me I made her feel safe at one time. (I admit I was hoping to remind her that I did demonstrate such ability as well as being genuinely appreciative).
That was nearly two weeks ago and no response. I know I was very nervous leaving the first message, less so the second, but I think it’s a case of getting my vibe/energy right that might make her feel comfortable in talking to me. So I’m letting things be for now, trying to work on myself more and planning to leave a much more confident positive message if I should call again and receive no answer. (If I do a third attempt, I will have to move on if she doesn’t respond, I owe myself that at least.)
Thanks for reading such a LONG post...part of it is venting, part of me is looking for advice like am I crazy to still want her after all the drama and all this time. I do feel real care for her too and I don’t want her to feel uncomfortable so if I’m bang out of order here someone let me know. Cheers

2020.07.13 03:16 bigdamnshinyhero Santee BIPOC

Hi all,
I’m a Filipina/Latina woman (25) living in Santee. I moved here about a year ago, into my (Caucasian/37) partners condo. It always felt really safe and comfortable here until the dude at the Vons decided to wear his hood, then shortly after the protests following George Floyd’s tragic death by police.
I am reaching out to the other BIPOC around town to see if any of you feel uncomfortable; and if yes, what you do to make living here feel better. I love the town and although we may not be here forever, I want to make the best out of living here now.
I haven’t been targeted by any hateful people personally, but I feel uneasy being alone out around town (on bike, walking) because racial tension is currently elevated.
Thanks for sharing in advance!

2020.07.04 17:51 ezgo22 Underrated Audio Dramas: First Half of 2020

So according to u/thecambridgegeek 's AudioDramaDebut Twitter feed, he's tracked 625 audio drama/fiction/RPG debuts in the first half of 2020 alone. That is quite the avalanche. Many good shows got their due recognition but some may have fallen through the cracks. I've a curated list of debuts from late 2019 to now, that still have 20 or fewer ratings on the iTunes store. Links are to landing pages with multiple subscription options or RSS feeds. If you have suggestions for shows that I may have missed, please feel free to add in the comments. If you're interested in past posts I have made on this subject, check these links out: 1, 2, 3 , 4, 5.
There's also been interest in supporting podcasts by Black creators so I've highlighted the relevant podcasts.

  1. Verity Weaver (Space Adventure, Philosophy, Complete): If you were given the chance to escape into the illusion of a perfect life, would you take it? Verity Weaver is a gritty, honest, and immersive science-fiction audio drama about reality, identity, and what we owe to the universe.
  2. Genius by Tracey Houston (Sherlock Holmes, Romantic Thriller): Sabine Moriarty, a brilliant but reclusive mathematician, is caught between her criminal brother Jim and his rival- Sherlock Holmes.
  3. NORA by Shadeaux Public Radio(Horror, Complete): These recordings were emailed to us without explanation. The sender has not responded to any questions. We cannot confirm the veracity of the information contained within, but believe that the creator of these recordings is acting in good faith. The woman, who calls herself NORA, is investigating a strange series of events that wander between the boundaries of perception and reality. There is some suggestion of organized crime, paranormal influence, or perhaps simple madness. We will continue to make these available as they are sent to us. They present no danger to the listener and seem to provide a source of support for the creator.
  4. Inco by ItMe (Space Opera): A Sci-Fi story about a disgruntled information seller, a mysterious space boy, and an android doing her best.
  5. COVID39 (Science Fiction, Current Events, Black Creator): Twenty years after Covid-19 brought the world to a standstill, a man and a woman who were quarantined together as kids question the validity of their current romantic relationship. They salvage audio recordings left by their parents during the pandemic, our present, to come to terms with their trauma. This is a fictional audio drama that points out the humanity of our fateful present and examines the future we are helping to create for our children.
  6. Putting 2&2 Together (Drama, LGBTQ): What do you do when the sh*t has already hit the fan? A former comic book artist out to re-invent himself. His estranged sister who isn't ready to forgive. 7. Georgie Romero is Done For (Comedy, Supernatural): Georgie Romero has risen from the grave, driven to solve the mystery of her former human life with the help of an inept witch and a cynical ghost.
  8. Have Monster, Will Travel (Comedy, Cryptids): There are very few moments in your life where you can do something radical for someone you love. Meet Riley and Render. Roommates. Best friends. There's just one small hitch. Riley is a young career-focused woman with a little bit of burnout and Render... well, he's a monster. When Render admits feelings of sadness over not knowing who he is or where he comes from, Riley makes a bold choice: find his family, whatever the cost. Have Monster, Will Travel: they're just two best friends on the adventure of a lifetime.
  9. That Damned Hotel (Comedy, Supernatural): The place: Hollow Grove Hotel, a lovely establishment that's been the site of only a few (dozen) murders over the years. Also, it stands over a portal to hell, so it might have a minor demon infestation. But, no bedbugs!

  11. The Pasithea Powder (Science Fiction): On a faraway world, Captain Sophie Green is recovering from a war that ripped her planet apart and left her personal relationships for dead. Among the many atrocities committed on both sides was the invention of Pasithea Powder, a drug with memory altering properties. Thankfully, the drug has been eradicated and only a handful of scientists—now political prisoners—know how to recreate it. When Sophie sees one of those scientists walking free, she has no choice but to turn to an estranged friend for help.
  12. The All Arcadians (Fantasy, Comedy): The All-Arcadians is a fantasy radio play following a team of misfits attempting to find their way in the magical land of Arcadia. 13. Mage and Machine (Science Fiction/Fantasy): A mysterious teenage sorceress escapes from her tower and teams up with a cyborg ex-con with a shady past, as they try to stay one step ahead of the ruthless Royal Sorceress bent on imprisoning them both.
  14. Connie Cosmos (Space Opera): Equipped with only her communicator ring, robotic arm and quick wit, Connie Cosmos fights all manner of fearsome foes. Join Connie and all her equally compelling friends as they tangle with the great galactic evil of Zander Zar. Can our heroes stop evil and still find their way back home to Earth? Find out on the exciting first season of Connie Cosmos.
  15. I Want Everything (Comedy, Surreal, Complete): Two young strangers appear in a dimensionless void. They learn from their unwilling and flatulent guide that they have been summoned to undertake The Bidding. The Bidding is a difficult, no, nearly impossible task. The most likely outcome for the summoned is death ... but completing The Bidding is their only way home. What is the curious purpose of these quests? Who are the mysterious Stewards who oversee the process? What ancient prophesies drive a conflict that threatens to engulf our heroes and the vast Hachne Empire? What happens when a Giant meets a social influencer and why does everyone dream that someone else has taken their spoon!?

A darkly comic reboot of Chekhov’s classic THE SEAGULL, this rollicking tale examines the pitfalls of making art and making love in modern day America.

(The podcast feed lacks the last 3 episodes, which are available via the website)
  19. Fire Bird (Folklore, Complete): Fire Bird tells the story of Prince Ivan Tsarevich, youngest son of a powerful Tsar who leaves the comforts of the Mortal Lands to venture into the Wilds, where creatures of myth still dwell and danger lies around every turn. Unknowingly drawn into a deadly battle of wills by an immortal sorcerer . . .A labour of love for its writer, Fire Bird weaves together different renditions of the phoenix story with established Slavic folklore to tell a unique version of the legendary bird’s tale.
  20. Dueling Pistols (Historical Fiction, Complete): Both men raised a pistol for the chance to start again. One would pull the trigger to protect a friend. One to eliminate an enemy. 2020.06.20 06:05 DaddyLitty69 Incoming SUPER DUPER LONG post (pretty much a novel but with a tl;dr)... why is this girl on my mind and how do I get her out of it?

Disclaimer: This post may or may not contain mild NSFW content. I have asked a few friends for advice on this same subject and while most were okay with it, one was uncomfortable about one tidbit I shared. Regardless, reader discretion is advised.
I understand that this is a VERY, VERY LONG ass post so feel free to scroll down to the very end for the tl;dr if you’d like.
Now for the context. Okay, so I [23M] had this girl [23F] (who I’ll call Sarah) in my class last year and I didn’t really pay any mind to her until after midterms. Practically all of last year, I had a fling with this Filipina girl who I’ll call Amanda.
Her and I were still recuperating from our past relationships so we didn’t wanna date and use each other as rebounds, so we remained intimate with each other but never committed. Anyway, at this point, Amanda and I were kind of growing stale and things got a bit toxic. We were bickering about not giving each other enough attention and blah blah. Because of this and because Amanda didn’t live anywhere around me, I guess my eyes were fixed on Sarah instead.
Funny thing is, Sarah and I never talked. We were in the same class but the way it functioned, it was a lab course. So people really only interacted with each other if they were in the same lab group. Sure enough, we weren’t. On top of that, she never talked to her lab partners unless they spoke to her and even then, she’d only say the bare minimum. I recall there only being one time where they were all cracking up for some reason (lab-related), but that’s it. Outside of class, most of us would sometimes have small talk with our lab partners but she’d just be glued to her phone the whole time and not say a word to anyone else.
From time to time throughout the labs, her table was in front of mine and she was in my POV so I’d just be glancing at her. I don’t know why my eyes were set on her, but they were. Eventually, the last day of class came and I’m like, fuck. I don’t wanna end this semester without saying a word to her. I gotta say something. The only socially conventional thing my dumbass could think of was asking her if I could borrow a pencil. Boring exchange, she lended me one and that’s it. Nothing special.
After that, I told a friend of mine about the situation and he told me to just add her on social media. I was super confused, not knowing the slightest clue on how to do that. He told me to just find her name on the class-list, go one by one, and look them all up until I find her. I’m like, this is some Joe from You shit but okay (then again so is taking occasional glances at her during class). It ended up working and my friend advised me to wait about a week or so to add her just so it wasn’t too awkward. I listened, waited, added her and — to my surprise — she accepted my request a day later.
At this point, Amanda and I were just reaching our endpoint. She was wondering why I wasn’t giving her attention and I was just fed up with her using me as a diary for how everyone else in the world is amazing except me (e.g. would ramble about how some super gorgeous guy/girl gave her the best tissue paper ever and just said “ew, uh thanks I guess bitch” if I helped her with her homework). It was toxic energy and I wanted to walk away from it. So I did by bidding her farewell.
After this, my attention was solely fixed on Sarah. I took a look at her Facebook and saw that she never posts. She’s been a straight up lurker for many years. So I’m like, fuck. How do I approach this girl when I have nothing to go off of? My friend ended up advising me to just message her, play it dumb, say she looks familiar and ask if I know her from somewhere. My scared ass waited like two months to do so and she ended up replying back saying I look familiar too, then I mentioned our mutual class and we started talking from there.
There were paragraph replies from here on out by the both of us, probably around the size of the first three paragraphs of this post. She caught me off-guard because in person, she seemed antisocial and introverted. But through text, she’s straight up “LMAOOOO”’ing at everything, constantly using “😂” and “💀”, using slang like “lit” and “bruh”, and telling me how much she likes to drink and get lit with her friends.
At first, I thought maybe she was putting on a front because she was intimidated by my social media presence. Personally, I don’t give a shit about how “popular” someone is on social media or how much they use it, it’s all just bullshit internet points to me. But I do know that some people care about that and feel insecure if they talk to someone with a larger presence than them. Just to get the numbers out there, her Snapchat score is 6,000+ while mine is 30,000+. She has like 5 Instagram followers and I have 1,000+. So is she intimidated by that? I don’t know but I personally don’t see her as any less because of that. Again, it’s all just meaningless numbers to me and it doesn’t put someone above or below someone else.
Turns out though, it wasn’t a front. She’d occasionally mention things like spilling Blue Moon on her laptop and was even surprised when I told her I don’t drink. Anyway, we kept talking and she’d pretty much match my energy. One time when I mentioned that we could’ve been best friends if we went to the same high school, she said “it’s never too late to be best friends 😌”. I was expecting her to say something like, “Aw lol yeah maybe we could’ve”.
All of a sudden though, she stopped messaging back. We just continued our Snapchat streak — which, for those of you who don’t know, is usually just like sending someone a snap of your ceiling or your sofa once a day — but that’s it. At the point, she apologized profusely for not replying and kept promising that she would, but never did. She also mentioned being socially exhausted at one point and again promised to reply, but again never did. I never bugged her about it or said “hello?” or anything, she brought it up all on her own.
After a while, she ended up leaving my snap on “Opened” and never replied. Then we stopped talking and I talked to one of my friends about it, who told me to message her and ask her how she’s been. I hate messaging people first constantly, I always want it to be a back and forth thing. So I compromised and said that this’ll be the last time I message her first.
She didn’t apologize for never replying or anything, just told me how she’s been and we started talking again from there. We got our Snapchat streak back and we started messaging each other again for over a week. She sent me a snap, I noticed a ukulele on the door. I asked her if she plays then I told her that I sing and told her to let me know if she has any requests. Again, just like before, she matched my energy. Instead of saying “yeah if I think of anything, I’ll let you know!”, she gave me a specific song to sing. I sang it and sent it to her. After that, she again stopped replying to the messages and didn’t snap me back. This time though, she didn’t leave my snap on opened. My snap just ended up expiring after like a month I think. She still views my story but that’s it.
The weird thing is, I don’t know why I care so much. Because here’s the plot twist... I’m not physically attracted to her. Also, I’m not sexually attracted to her either. There were moments where I tried thinking of her during my alone time but I get absolutely no arousal. Not even 0.01%. Just to give a visual, she has split ends, doesn’t wear makeup, has gaps between her teeth, has acne and dead marks across her forehead, and her forehead’s a bit oversized. By no means am I making the insinuation that any of these features automatically make someone unattractive, for I have actually found people with at least one of these aforementioned features attractive. I sincerely apologize in advance if anyone is offended by my visual description of this girl.
I wanna know what my issue is. Why am I so hung up on a girl who I don’t find physically or sexually attractive? The only hypothesis I can think of is something my friend came up with. So, when I was friends with Amanda, we had a mutual friend who I’ll call Kate. Kate, Amanda and I were like a close friend trio. When I showed Kate a picture of Sarah, she rolled her eyes and told me that the reason I’m into her is because she’s a spitting image of Amanda — which I initially found to be disrespectful because Sarah’s Filipina just like Amanda so I thought Kate was saying that just because of that. But then I’ve been starting to think that there might be some merit in her theory.
Furthermore, I would like to know how I can get Sarah out of my mind. When I’m having a good day, I sometimes think of how she stopped replying and it sours my mood. I wanna enjoy life and not have someone who isn’t a part of it to ruin it.
With that being said, any and all advice would be highly appreciated. And just for getting through to this extremely long ass post (I’m sorry everyone), I will telepathically send you all a mental cookie just for your amazing patience.
tl;dr as promised: Added an introverted and shy girl (who I do not find physically or sexually attractive) from my class last year and started talking to her this year. Even though she matched my energy (both in message length and relaying friendly gestures), she stopped replying twice and we will probably never talk again but she’s still on my mind and I can’t get her out of it. Why is she in my mind and how do I get her out of it?

2020.06.15 01:47 Malina_Misa Fear of coming out to my mom on multiple fronts

I'm not even sure this is the subreddit for this, but I just need to vent and maybe get some advice.
Long story short I love my mom. My mom is the most important person in my life, and since I was a child, I've always seen my mom being an important part of my life for forever. It's a thing in my culture as well (I'm Filipina), where at least in my family, parents are expected to stay close to their children. And I've always desired that.
But as I've gotten older and developed my own identity, I've started embodying things she wouldn't agree with. One of which is that I'm gay (bisexual)--my mom has said herself that she's not sure she's ready for her children to be in gay relationships. So her rejecting my gay identity is a big one.
Another is that politically, I'm really drifting further and further away from her as I get older. Despite being a POC immigrant, she is shockingly conservative. And that is just not me anymore.
Third, I'm dating a white boy. As bizarre as it might sound, telling my mom I'm dating a white person would be equivalent to telling her that I'm dating a woman. I just do not think she would accept it--or even if she did, there'd be a lot of tension between her and my partner.
I'm getting to a point in my life where I need to do what's best for me. And it shatters me that doing what's best for me may involve alienating the most important person in my life. This has been my worst fear for years now, and I see it closer and closer to reality.
I'm sorry, I'm new here and this was mainly a vent. But if anyone else has experienced having to lose a loved one to do what's best for you, I would appreciate hearing about it.
Tl;dr: I have to come out to my conservative, immigrant mom on three fronts: I'm gay, not-conservative, and I'm dating a white guy. My mom is the most important person in my life but I may have to lose her for being myself. And I don't know how to cope with that.

2020.06.12 20:20 adcymru I think I'm an INTP, but I'm not so sure...

I've gotten INTP on many tests, with the occasional INTJ or INFP. I identify the most strongly with this type, but oftentimes there's certain things I don't identify with. When I take cognitive functions tests, they tend to all be used at similar amounts. I usually contradict myself a lot too.
For some extra context, my enneagram type is 5w6.
I hope this little questionnaire will help clear things up.
.....
• How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself.
I'm a 16 year old girl living in the US. I do quite well in school and have been raised to focus more on education than anything else. I have a decent amount of friends, who are mostly introverts. I prefer being around extroverts though, because they're more likely to talk. My best friend is an ENFP, while my partner is an ESFP (maybe ISFP? I'm still figuring that out). ESFPs are supposed to be INTP repellent, as far as I know, yet we've been going steady for about a year.
• Is there a medical diagnosis that may impact your mental stability somehow?
Nope. I don't take any meds either.
• Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it?
My father is Lutheran, but my mother is Catholic and Filipina. She is less strict than your typical "Asian mom," but she's an Asian mom no less. School always came first. My parents tend to fight a lot, so a lot of arguing happens in my household. I end up getting quite stressed when someone is yelling. These days, there is much more arguing as my beliefs change compared to my mothers'. She is very traditional and quite religious, whereas I tend to disregard authority and question stuff like the Bible. I often say that the Bible cannot be trusted completely, because it was written by man. These days I consider myself indifferent to religion, probably fitting the definition of agnostic. As for authority, I believe that respect goes both ways, and firmly disagree with the idea of listening to someone whether they're right or wrong, just because they're older.
• What do you do as a job or as a career (if you have one)? Do you like it? Why or why not?
N/A
• If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed?
It really depends. I often have no problem being by myself, but I can't really just stay inside. I need to go somewhere, otherwise I get agitated. Perhaps staying alone energizes me too much and I need somewhere to spend that energy.
• What kinds of activities do you prefer? Do you like, and are you good at sports? Do you enjoy any other outdoor or indoor activities?
I prefer less physical activities. My hobbies include drawing, playing video games, and worldbuilding. I'm not really that good at sports. I'd like to play, but I get easily tired, which sometimes frustrates me. One of my favorite things to do though is go on long car rides, listening to music. I like to just sit there and look out the window and see different places. I guess you could say I have a bit of wanderlust. I get tired with the same scenery and would like to turn down a different road just for the heck of it. During these trips I often wonder what it's like for the people to live in the places I see.
• How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate?
I would say I'm fairly curious, and brainstorm loads of ideas that just get stuffed into some file cabinet in my mind. Most of my ideas are for my worldbuilding projects, or story writing. Of course, most of the time I have too many that I can't string them together, and nothing gets done. I have written a bit in a past, but it won't even get past the second chapter before everything needs to be rewritten. Other curiosities of mine are just random things I wonder about. I often spend hours in what I like to call, "the Wikipedia rabbit-hole," just to learn different things. My favorite topics to look up are taxonomy, evolutionary biology, and philosophy. As for the last part of the question, I'm not really sure what is meant by "environmental vs conceptual." Does conceptual in this case mean abstract? If it does, then I'd guess I'd be somewhere in the middle. I do like thinking/learning about abstract ideas--especially with the new philosophy obsession. I guess this also means "what if vs what is." I like to think more about possibility, but also like learning about the facts.
• Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be?
I normally would not like this role, though sometimes I feel that I have to because my way seems to be the best way. I would say my leadership style would be more open. I'd like to have discussions, because doing it all by yourself can be tiring. Whenever I take this role, it is very tiring after a while. So I think I could be okay with it, but not consistently.
• Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity?
I'd say I'm very coordinated, at least with my hands. When I was little, I'd build things like cars, planes, or animals out of stuff like cardboard, tape, and pipe cleaners. These days I just make art, but mostly digital art. It takes less time. As for the rest of my body, I am definitely not coordinated. I cannot dance, I often don't know where to put my hands, and my mom says I walk like I'm counting each step. I often feel disconnected from my own body.
• Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer.
Yes, I make mostly digital art. Digital art gives you more freedom over the drawing, and there's the magic undo button too. I've been branching out to different styles as I improve, but one of my favorite things to do is color the image. Coloring is fun as you can play with the lighting too. I often draw my own characters mlre than anything else. But lately I've started a new project I call "raw." It's meant to emulate the human self/experience. This project uses a rather rough style to make it look less refined. It's hard for me, because I have a strong urge for it to look perfect. But I want to make myself uncomfortable with this project, because it focuses more on the feeling/figurative aspect of the image. It forces me to express my feelings, haha.
• What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them?
I don't usually dwell on the past, because it is what it is. I sometimes wonder what could've been if things were different, but I've found that I waste my time thinking about things that have already happened. I'm aware that my past made me who I am, so I wouldn't change anything about it. I find myself thinking about the future a lot, imagining different scenarios and fantasies. I guess I'm a bit of a dreamer. When I'm stuck in my mind, I rarely find myself in the present. The present just happens. However it is nice to go back there when I get tired of thinking. It's refreshing to just get back to reality once in a while.
• How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so?
For most things, I would help simply because it is polite to do so. Maybe not if I am busy at that moment though. For people I really care about though, I love to just help them with whatever. I treat them like a parent almost. However with any problem that includes "I feel upset" or something I cannot help you. I would offer solutions that I find would solve it effectively but I can't really empathize with someone, or just listen to them.
• Do you need logical consistency in your life?
I mean, I suppose it is important to have structure. You need to being to make sense of the world before you can deviate from that structure. It would certainly be draining trying to make sense out of nonsense all the time, but it's nice to have surprises.
• How important is efficiency and productivity to you?
Important? Ish? I would like to get things done. Do I? Hardly. I wouldn't say I'm very much of either of those things.
• Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that?
I don't think I really control others. But if someone does bother me my go-to solution tends to be yelling at them to stop. I think that's a result of my upbringing. But usually I couldn't care what others do, as long as it doesn't involve me.
• What are your hobbies? Why do you like them?
As I've said before, I love to draw. Using my imagination gives me some sense of freedom and control over my life. I love video games too, for a similar reason. It provides an escape from reality, but also requires thinking to solve various obstacles. Puzzles in general are quite stimulating for me. Also like I've said before, long car rides are fun. I like exploring places, and usually these places are somewhat remote/deep in nature. I love being in nature. It's fun to explore and is appealing to my senses. When I'm outside is when I'm the most "in the moment." I get a break from thinking so much. My last favorite thing to do is simply sleep. It shuts down my mind for a while, but when I lie in bed I also think about different scenarios until I fall asleep. I sleep quite a lot. It...may be a slight problem.
• What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses?
I am mostly a visual/auditory learner. I have very good memorization, to the point where I really don't study for school. For me, classes are meant to be more mentally stimulating than physically stimulating. I like gaining knowledge or new insights. I would do terribly jumping into something head first.
• How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go?
I do plan. I have most of my future planned out in my head. But that's the future. For immediate tasks, I "plan." I can organize stuff but everything is usually done at the last minute, and I tend to improvise somewhat. For example, I once planned out and wrote an entire 6 page essay in the 2 hours before the deadline. To be fair, it was just the first draft, but in those last few moments my brain's productivity skyrockets. Deadlines stress me out a lot, but without them nothing will get done.
• What are your aspirations in life, professionally and personally?
I'd like to see myself in ten years living independently, with a good job and all. The job I want in particular is to be a marine biologist. Maybe an aquarium worker, or a teacher, who knows. I'd like to be free, living my life to the fullest. Visit many places, and learn as much as I can, so that when I finally settle down I'd be satisfied.
• What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why?
My material fears consist of heights/riding airplanes. Those are my top fears. I'm very sensitive to where I am in relation to the ground below me. Even though I'm not religious, you will see me praying every 5 seconds on a plane whenever there's turbulence. I try to calm down by focusing on something else, like a word puzzle. Weird quirk, I solve puzzles like word searches extremely fast when I'm on a plane. Maybe it's because my senses are heightened due to fear. It's frustrating, because even though I know statistically planes are super safe, I feel like even thinking about the possibility of a crash will jinx a peaceful flight. What makes me uncomfortable are usually loud noises. Noise stresses me out because it just fills my brain up, as opposed to silence allowing me to think or just sit there peacefully. As for what I hate, it's ignorance and dishonesty. People who don't listen or lie. People who make promises that they don't fulfill. People who refuse to look at the facts, or beyond their prejudices. Those are the people that absolutely infuriate me. They misunderstand, but also won't take the time to understand. Unfortunately, they're also my parents :/
• What do the "highs" in your life look like?
Hm, it's hard to say. But it would be the times where I feel the most free. It's hard to define exactly how. I wanna say, being in the moment, where I don't have to think all the time to escape, because I'll already be where I wanna be.
• What do the "lows" in your life look like?
Just endless thinking. Too much of it, because I can't do anyting else. It won't even be about stuff I want to think about, it'll just be like noise, or constantly changing TV channels. Where I'm too tired to think or enjoy the present. I'll just be stuck.
• How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so?
I'd say I'm pretty attached to reality. I often notice little details faster than others. But I do daydream a lot, about what could be, or I make up some fantastical story in my mind. I can be a little idealistic, but can also see the limitations of the real world. I would say I am aware of my surroundings when I daydream.
• Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about?
My first thoughts would probably be along the lines of where, why, and how. I might try to find a way out. While doing so, I'll be thinking about why this happened. Did someone of something bring me here? Why would they want me? Did I do something that warranted punishment? Or is this an experiment? After a while I might get tired of trying to escape, and retreat into my head for an actual "escape." I would just let my mind wander wherever, until I eventually get tired and just fall asleep.
• How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it?
I would take a very long time. I'm very indecisive with big decisions. I would weigh the pros and cons and such. If the two options are too similar though, I may just give up and go with whatever. I don't really change my mind because what's done is done.
• How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life?
I think I have a tendency to ignore my emotions, especially negative emotions, until they burst. It's happened a few times before. I'm not a very expressive person. I take a long time to process things emotionally, because I hate being irrational. Oftentimes I go on the internet to help understand my emotions. I'm not sure how important emotions are to me, but I know I need to do a better job of expressing them, so I don't come off as cold or disconnected.
• Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why?
I would never simply agree with someone to appease them, especially if it's against something I feel strongly about. I voice my opinion a lot, which leads to arguments. It's something I need to better control. If I do just agree though, it's probably because I don't care about the topic at hand.
• Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why?
I don't normally break rules, because I wouldn't want to waste my time getting punished. However, I do believe authority should be challenged. I tend to live by the whole, "question authority" motto. If I don't agree with someone in authority, I usually make it known. If they hear me out, great. The matter is resolved, whether they change their mind or not. If they refuse to listen, it does piss me off. I refuse to listen to anyone who's reason is just "because I say so" or "because I'm the older one."
